I've never believed in alien abductions. They always happen to crackpots or the mentally insane, but what else could this be?

I've never been so confused, or in so much pain. I think that's what keeps waking me — the pain.

For the life of me, I've no idea where I am or how I got here. I can't think why they might've considered me special or even different. The reason they've chosen me is a mystery.  I want to run but I'm too tired to fight them off, and too tired to resist the sleep as it overcomes me. Maybe that's part of their plan.

***

I can hear a distant clicking now, like a camera taking photographs. I can't see. I feel so lethargic. I struggle to move but I can smell something soothing. Mint. Peppermint, I think...fresh and clean.

I try to wake myself but a bright light is glaring down at me, forcing me to keep my eyes closed. Eventually, I suppose, I sleep...

***

My mouth is dry and my jaw is so sore. The clothes I'm wearing feel all skewed, like I've been re-dressed. The wire of my bra cuts into me so uncomfortably. I wonder why these creatures have even bothered to re-dress me at all. My body's too uncoordinated to rectify these things and I feel like I've been probed, front and back. Again I try to open my eyes but the light...ah!...it's still so bright.

Through squinted eyelids I search for the little green men on the other side of the light. You know...huge dark eyes...long thin faces? But I can't see through the brightness. Then I hear the sharp chime of metal on metal, like kitchen utensils coming together. There are voices too — soft — telling me whoever, whatever, has done this to me is still there. I groan and shut my eyes.

***

I could've dozed a few seconds, a few hours, or a few days. I have no way to tell. The light is still there, but it's pointing away from me now and it's not as harsh. Still, it takes my eyes a while to focus.

"How are you feeling, Miss Smith?"

I don't answer. My mouth feels like it's full of cotton wool.

"You'll feel groggy for a while, but the wisdom teeth are out. You won't be eating much for a while, I'm afraid."

I struggle to stand, and the man with the voice helps me up as another grabs my arm.  I notice the buttons on my blouse are done up incorrectly. The two men smile at me with perfect white teeth.

"Come back in a week, Miss Smith, and we'll take out those stitches. Just make an appointment before you leave."
