Preservation of Word Processing Documents
Barnes, Ian (Date Created: Jul 2006)
This report addresses the issues of what are suitable file formats for the long term storage of word processing documents and how can these documents be converted to a suitable format. Several case studies are used to illustrate approaches to the problem. A prototype application, the Digital Scholar's Workbench, which implements some of the approaches in the report, is discussed. The report ends with a proposed preservation strategy for word processing documents which distinguishes between lecacy documents and those documents not yet created.
