The History of the Competition
Earlier this century Dorothea Mackellar's family owned several properties in the Gunnedah District. From her visits to the country, Dorothea received inspiration to write much of her poetry and prose.
In 1983, Mrs. Mikie Maas OAM PHF had the foresight to instigate a poetry competition with the aim of igniting a spirit of patriotism amongst Australia's youth, similar to that felt by herself and by thousands of other Australians upon reading Dorothea Mackellar's famous poem, "My Country".
The poetry competition has grown from strength to strength. Aims of the competition are to discover encourage k sustain creative ability in school children of all ages. It is hoped the contributions made by children will add value to the celebration of the Centenary of Federation.
The NADC is proud to once again support the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Competition for Australian Schools.
