Alana Boyd has made a piece of Australian athletics history by winning the women's pole vault at the Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Boyd's parents Ray and Denise also won individual Commonwealth track and field titles - the first time this feat has ever been achieved by an Australian couple and a sibling.

Ray won the men's pole vault in Brisbane in 1982 and Denise - nee Robertson - was the 200m champion in 1978.

Alana won the final with 4.40 metres on a countback from Marianna Zachariadi of Cyprus.

"[It feels] pretty amazing. The goal was to come away with the gold and I've done that, so I coudn't be happier," she said.

"It was there for the taking. I went into the competition on personal best ranked second.

"And being such a long season, all of us haven't competed in the last five weeks, which I guess is not an ideal preparation leading into a major championships.

"I've had a really good month of preparation leading into this and actually, it's probably the best month of preparation I've ever had.

"I did what I had to do ... it came down to a countback and I won the gold."
