By 17 July, searchers had failed to find any trace of four men who had not been seen since leaving the small Sunshine Coast port of Mooloolaba headed for Swansea, NSW on July 6. They had ignored warnings of stormy conditions and heavy seas with swells from 4m to as high as 8m (according to the Bureau of Meteorology). The damaged wreck of 'Just Cruisin', their 11.6 metre converted wooden trawler was found in the shallow water at the northern entrance of Moreton Bay on 14 July.
It is believed the cruiser broke up after being swapped by large waves less than eight hours after leaving Mooloolaba.
The air and sea search ran for six days and covered a large area of the east coast. It involved more than 20 fixed wing aircraft and 13 helicopters |
