Leslie Wilkie (1879-1935)

A fine portrait painter, Leslie Wilkie's works appear in many of Australia's major and regional art galleries. Born in Melbourne, Wilkie studied at the National Gallery of Victoria SchooL His ponrairs have been exhibited in the Archibald Prize shows and he received an honourable mention for his work in the Panama Pacific Exhibition in San Francisco. After studying in Europe in 1904 and 1905, Wilkie moved to Adelaide where he taught painting at the South Australian School of Art, served as presidem of [he South Australian Society of Arrs and was appointed curawr of the Art Gallery of South Australia from 1926 to 1935.

Leslie Wilkie worked mostly in oils, occasionally painting landscapes but favouring figure studies and portraits, many of them commissioned, This portrait was acquired by the National Library from the Wilkie family in the early 1950s.
