On their arrival in Australia in 1939, Viennese dancer Gertrud
Bodenwieser and her company Tanzgruppe Bodenwieser were already
well-travelled and internationally acclaimed exponents of the New
Dance. Despite severe limitations in local venues and theatrical
facilities Bodenwieser quickly achieved an Australia-wide reputation
for her choreography and teaching, and hers became the first theatrical
company to tour overseas from Australia. 0 World with its sumptuous
Indian setting was produced in 1945 and contrasted the jubilation of
victory with the misery of defeat in a sobering reflection on the
futility of war.
