Rex Nan Kivell Collection
Paul Gauguin went to Tahiti in the 1890s, leaving his wife and family
to devote his life to art. He lived there, with only a brief return to
France, until his death in 1903 and produced many images of Tahiti and
its people. This watercolour of a Tahitian house in its lush tropical
setting is typical of the many drawings and paintings in the
manuscript. The liveliness and variety of these quick sketches
demonstrate the artistic inspiration he found in the idyllic
environment. The original of Noa Noawas presented to the Louvre Museum
in 1925.
