[Nutmeg Pigeon] [1917]
watercolouc; 76 x 56 cm
From the Pictorial Collection
Ellis Rowan travelled Australia and the world pursuing her career as a
brilliant painter of wildflowers, insects and birds. A self-taught
artist, she combined scientific accuracy with great freshness and a
prodigious output. From the 1870s to her death she painted some 3000
pictures, winning many prizes, the approval of botanists and the
patronage of royalty.
The National Library holds the largest collection of Ellis Rowan's work
- 947 of her paintings, mainly in watercolour and gouache. The Library
has recently celebrated these holdings by reproducing samples of her
artistry in the Ellis Rowan Address Book and a greeting card collection.
