The
ballet Protee, created in 1938, was a choreographic essay honouring the
spirit of Greek classicism. During the tour to Australia by the Covent
Garden Russian Ballet, the leading role of the god Proteus was
frequently danced by Anton Dolin. Sono Osato danced one of the five
nymphs who come to a temple by the sea to invoke the presence of the
god. The ballet's surrealist set and costume designs by Giorgio de
Chirico, and its choreography borrowed from poses on Greek friezes,
made it an unusual but popular item in the Australian repertoire of the
Covent Garden Russian Ballet
