MS 5959 of the Library's Manuscript Collection comprises the illustrated manuscripts and diaries of Donald Friend, running from 1931 through to 1988, and documenting his personal life alongside broader issues of Australian social and artistic culture. Two National Library publications celebrate this material: the recently published The Genius of Donald Friend: Drawings from the Diaries 1942-1989 (Selected and Introduced by Lou Klepac--see inside story, p. 3); and an imminent multi-volume publication of extracts from the diaries, edited by Dr Anna Gray-the first volume of which is scheduled to appear towards the end of this year.
