The
collections of the National Library of Australia, perhaps surprisingly,
include many items relating to American-born citizens. Chief among
these are the papers of King O'Malley (1858-1953), a member of the
first Commonwealth Parliament who was closely concerned with the
founding of the Commonwealth Bank and the establishment and design of
Canberra. Tradition has it that O'Malley was a Canadian but he was,
most probably, born in Kansas in 1858.
