This portrait of Professor (later Sir) Tannate William Edgeworth David (1858-1934), Professor of Geology at the University of Sydney, was made by George Marston, who accompanied him on Ernest Shackleton’s British Antarctic Expedition of 1907-1909. With Douglas Mawson and A.F. Mackay, Edgeworth David reached the South Magnetic Pole on 16 January 1909. The National Library holds the David family papers in its Manuscript Collection, at MS 8890. Among them are documents relating to David’s wife, Caroline (or 'Cara' ), herself a leading figure in Sydney society for many decades in the early twentieth century. (See story, page 11 of this issue.) The drawing was initially sold at the British Antarctic Exhibition in London, on 5 October 1909, the Library subsequently purchasing it at a Christie’s sale in 1999.
