The National Library holds more than 280 paintings, watercolours, sketches, pen and ink drawings and sketchbooks of William Strutt, a most prolific artist. The majority were executed during his 10 years in Australia during the 1850s and the 1860s and constitute a wonderful record of life in Victoria at that time.

As well as chronicling the development of the new colony and its residents through his art, Strutt was also moved to paint the landscape and its unique animals for which, his own writings reveal, he had a great fondness.
