Capture
of Ned Kelly is one of 24 paintings by Patrick William Marony, held in
the Library’s Pictures Collection. Born in Carragh, Waterford County,
Ireland, Marony came to Australia c.1883. A man of many talents, he was
known variously as a draper, painter, photographer, journalist and
director. He also wrote the stories for three films produced by the
Australian Life Biograph Co., Manly in 1911. Marony painted portraits
and landscapes, and was known to have had a particular interest in
depicting the Australian bushranging era. On 14 June, 1894, the Sydney
Morning Herald, commenting on an exhibition of Marony’s ’stirring
scenes of the bushranging days', noted that he painted from authentic
photographs and visited the actual scenes of the events portrayed in
his paintings.
