Last year the National Library purchased a volume of works by West Australian
colonial artist Henry Prinsep [1844-1922). 'Scenes of Travel and Adventure in
Western Australia, Perth, 1880'-made up of pen-and-ink drawings, photographs,
pressed wildflowers and a watercolour-gives us a glimpse of West Australian colonial
life in the late 19th century. Thepicturesque and witty drawings with which Prinsep
illustrated his album belie some of the hardships he experienced in seeking to
establish himself and his family in the colony, See Malcolm Allbrook’s article
on the Prinsep family’s life, p. 11.
