In the late 1970's, in the heart of Australia, two Aboriginal people and a non-Aboriginal associate had a dream.

Founding Members: John Macumba,
Freda Glynn and Phillip Batty

The dream was for Aboriginal voices to be heard throughout the world and for Aboriginal people to take ownership and control of their own future through a strong and vibrant media centre to be located in Alice Springs.

The dream became a reality in 1980 when the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA) was established.

The Aboriginal people of Central Australia own CAAMA, and its objectives focus on the social, cultural and economic advancement of Aboriginal peoples.

It has a clear mandate to promote Aboriginal culture, language, dance, and music while generating economic benefits in the form of training, employment and income generation. CAAMA produces media products that engender pride in Aboriginal culture, and informs and educates the wider community of the richness and diversity of the Aboriginal peoples of Australia.

The CAAMA Group is comprised of the following:

CAAMA Radio

A Radio network (8 KIN FM) broadcasting Aboriginal radio to most of Northern Territory including outlying islands, regional and remote South Australia and parts of New South Wales.

CAAMA Shop

The thriving retail, wholesale & distribution business of the CAAMA Group (CAAMA Shops) sell Aboriginal videos, artifacts, music, literature and crafts.

CAAMA Music

A unique sound recording studio and record label (CAAMA Music) produces indigenous music for the world.

CAAMA Productions

A television and video production company (CAAMA Productions) producing world class programs about Aboriginal culture, lifestyles and issues.

Imparja

Imparja Television, the commercial television station that broadcasts via satellite to one of the largest television service areas (footprint) in the world. CAAMA is Imparja Television's major share holder and is actively involved in the management of the company.
