Next course: June 2001 (Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre)

The Level Two ‘Swimming Specific’ Coaches Course is designed for the coach who has already established sound practical and theoretical knowledge of the sport of swimming. This course covers additional topics which will further develop coaching skills, Level Two is a more demanding course which will introduce coaches to various aspects of the sport sciences and their application to coaching.

COACHING ACCREDITATION REQUIREMENTS
All Level Two candidates have a four year period (i.e two years before/after the Level 2 Swimming Specific Course) to fulfill the following requirements of the Level Two Coaching Accreditation for Swimming.

Candidates applying for accreditation through the Australian Coaching Council and Australian Swimming Inc. as a Level Two - ‘Skills’ Coach must complete criteria 1 through 5. Candidates wishing to register as a Level Two - ‘Performance’ Coach must complete item six (6) of the criteria.

1. Must be a currently accredited Level One Swimming Coach under the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme of Australian Swimming Inc and Australian Coaching Council.

Note: Level One Masters Accreditation is not accepted.

2. Must have coached for at least two (2) years, with a minimum of two hundred and fifty (250) hours of ‘contact time’ per year with a ‘squad’ of swimmers.

Note: ‘Contact Time’ means training time, which may include pool, gym, or other fitness programs.

‘Squad’ consists of ten (10) or more swimmers.

3. The course is offered in two sections. Each section of the course may be taken in any order. Each section of the course must be completed.

a) a general "Coaching Principles’ course of not less than thirty (30) hours instruction which is approved by the ACC (See attached brochure)

b) ‘Swimming Specific’ course, of not less than thirty hours of instruction. (Victorian Course – 3 & 4 and 10 & 11 July registration form attached)

Candidates must complete the assessment paper in order to receive credit for the ‘Swimming Specific’ course component.

To receive accreditation 100% attendance at both sections of the course is required.

4. Must hold a current CPR qualification from an organisation recognised by the Australian Resuscitation Council.

5. Must be a current member of the Australian Swimming Coaches & Teachers Association (ASCTA).

6. Level Two - ‘Performance’ Coaches ONLY

Candidates must complete the ‘Coaching Performance Requirements’ for accreditation as a ‘Level Two - Performance’ Coach. Only one of the following four performance options must be satisfied. All options require that the candidate is the ‘primary coach’ of swimmers achieving any of the following standards:

Options

1) five individual swimmers who achieve one or more National Age Qualifying times (times must be done at State Association Meets where automatic timing has been used), or

2) three individual swimmers who reach respective State Age or Open Championship finals with a time at least equal to the National Age Qualifying time for that event and then go on to compete in that event at the Age or Open Championship (in that same year) under the direction of the Primary Coach, or

3) two individual swimmers who have reached the finals of the National Age or Open Championships; or

4) one or more swimmers with a disability who compete regularly in local competitions (these may be able bodied or disabled competitions) and who has represented Australia at a recognised international disabled competition

Gaining Credit for the Level Two ‘Swimming Specific’ Course

Coaches attending the Level Two Course can do so for:

  • Level One & Two Accreditation Update.
  • Level Two Accreditation. Candidates can now receive Level Two accreditation as either:
    1. Level Two - ‘Skills Coach’

b. Level Two - ‘Performance Coach’

The Level Two - ‘Skills’ Accreditation acknowledges that the Coach has completed basic theory and the minimum period of practical experience, at the Level Two coaching standard. In addition to the ‘Skills’ accreditation, the Level Two - ‘Performance’ accreditation, also acknowledges that the coach has trained swimmers to particular performance levels.
