Australian Women Working Together (AWWT)

International Women's Development Agency (IWDA)

Aims/Objectives
International Women's Development Agency is an Australian-based non-Government development organisation which undertakes projects in partnership with women from around the world, giving priority to working with women who suffer poverty and oppression.

We call ourselves a women's development agency because all our projects start with women; they come from needs identified by women, are managed by women and involve women at every stage of the project.

For a development organisation to work with the poorest and most oppressed makes sense, but IWDA's work with women is not only about addressing the everyday practical needs of their families such as food, water and shelter. IWDA's approach to development supports women's human rights and promotes equality between women and men.

IWDA's development philosophy recognises that development can only be effective if women are active participants in all aspects of economic, social and political life.

Achievements
During the 1997/1998 period IWDA staff worked with 18 partner organisations across 28 projects in Asia, the Pacific, Africa and Central America. Projects supported by IWDA are devised and managed by women who live and work in the communities themselves, helping ensure their relevance and effectiveness to women and their communities. Projects will achieve at least one of three things:

· bring tangible socio-economic benefits to poor people;
· provide definable and needed skills to women; and
· oppose injustices and exploitation of women.

Publications: Annual Report, Quarterly Newsletter

Activities include:
· annual International Women's Day Celebration events, Sydney, Melbourne;
· International Women's Day Lecture Series (in partnership with Victorian Women's Trust, YWCA, Absolutely Women's Health)
· 16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women;
· Development Education Speaking Tours of overseas project partners; and
· supporter events with reports from Overseas Programme Managers.
