Alison Rahill

Future Member for Vaucluse
Margin: -10.26%

Alison Rahill is the Australian Labor Party candidate for the seat of Vaucluse at the 2007 NSW state election.

A Bondi resident, Alison, 41, is a senior and highly respected member of the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU). For the past 5 years, she has represented workers in the Federal border protection agencies and currently holds the position of National Research Officer.

Her work in border protection saw her secure improvements to ‘use of force' equipment, training, safety and remuneration for Protective Service and Customs officers. She has successfully campaigned for greater law enforcement powers for security at airports, lobbied against plans to outsource quarantine powers to labour hire companies, and campaigned to maintain food safety standards at meat export plants.

In 2004, Alison sought and secured legislative amendments to allow airport security officers to carry out their work unhindered by the threat of legal action. Conscious of the need to protect our borders she realised that her officers needed clear guidelines if they were to be effective. The law now clearly states that officers have the right to search suspicious goods and vehicles without warrant and to detain those who arouse suspicion.

Last year Alison Rahill also helped give consumers a voice in the debate over the sell-off of Medibank Private. She believes that a sell-off would increase premiums and reduce benefits for policy holders. She has made numerous submissions and presentations to the Senate Committee examining the proposed privatisation. Ms Rahill has worked tirelessly to bring the issue to the public's attention and has formed a community alliance with academics, health consumer groups and chronic illness sufferers.

Alison has also been active in local politics, running on the Labor ticket with Waverley Mayor George Newhouse in the 2004 Local Government elections. She has campaigned on many local issues, particularly inappropriate development.
Ms Rahill is concerned at the problems facing local small business, particularly at Double Bay.

Ms Rahill's job is to look after people. She has been doing it every day for the past 5 years. Now she's ready to do it for the people of Vaucluse.
