The Alfred Deakin Lectures are an opportunity to celebrate the centenary of
Federation by reflecting on past achievements. And, in the spirit of Alfred
Deakin, who imagined Australia into being, to carry on imagining our shared future.

Alfred Deakin (1856-1919) was Australia’s second Prime Minister.

In these 13 broadcasts we present the highlights of the Alfred Deakin Lectures, delivered by 53 speakers gathered in Melbourne as part of a special Melbourne Festival coinciding with the first sitting of the Commonwealth Parliament a century ago. These scientists, environmentalists, architects, philosophers, jurists, historians, economists, politicians, writers, humanitarians and sports people, all leaders in their field, honour the Deakin legacy, his role as nation-builder and his openness to the world of ideas.
