The strength of Ararat Gallery's permanent collection is contemporary fibre and textile art, a focus that has been followed since 1974. Ararat Gallery holds one of only two major contemporary fibre and textile collections in regional galleries across Australia. Significant acquisitions in recent years have encouraged the profile of textiles as a fine-art form.
Artists represented in the collection include Elsje van Keppel, Bronwyn Oliver, Sarah Crowest, Richard Goodwin, Kay Lawrence, Tass Mavrogordato, Pamela Gaunt, Geraldine Burrowes and Juan Davila.
Key sub collections include:
Textile miniatures
The Art of the Japanese Package : traditional Japanese packaging predominantly using natural fibres
The Lady Barbara Grimwade Costume Collection : garments and accessories worn by Lady Barbara Grimwade that cover fashion between 1956- 1989
The Frances Burke Collection : screenprinted fabric lengths and samples by Australian designer Frances Burke
The City of Ararat, nestled on the eastern slopes of the Grampians mountains is a two hour drive west of Melbourne. It is the centre of a farming region producing fine merino wool and is also one of Australia's most acclaimed wine districts.
