This
election you will be asked to make choices about what kind of world
you live in.
The events
of the past few months, especially September 11, are sure to overshadow
anything of a more domestic nature here in Australia.
Yet the
problems we all face haven't gone away, whether it is workers
entitlements, industrial
pollution, the failing health
service, or our kids' education.
There are
still people living on the streets of Perth, young people damaging their
lives with drugs and elderly
people living in sub-standard aged-care facilities.
Our environment
is still suffering from being over-used and under-valued. On top of
that, the processes of globalisation
seem to slowly be stripping away our jobs and security, making this
a mean and frightening world.
So, what
are the Greens going to do about
this?
Well, we aren't
going to solve everybody's problem tomorrow, and neither is anyone else,
no matter how many promises they make. What we do promise is that we will
apply a holistic vision of how the world could be. It's more than just
saving a few
trees - it's about how we live our lives, the foods
we eat, and the impact we have on all aspects of the environment from
soil, air and water
quality to the species we share
our country with.
And yes,
it's more than pretending that we can defend
Australia with a few warships from the problems of the world around
us. Sadly, while there is war, conflict and environmental
degradation in the world it will have an impact on us. Global
Warming will impact us severely here in WA, and we can only partly
affect its outcome. The thousands of refugees
now appearing on our shores are the results of conflicts
and wars far away. But unless we do our bit, how are we going to
begin to solve these problems?
So that's
what we are on about. The Greens have policies covering most issues.
We have many ideas for alternative ways of addressing the challenges
and problems that face us. Most of all, we have the enthusiasm for the
task ahead.
What we
are asking for you to do, is to read our material, consider how you
will vote in this election, and if you like what the Greens are saying,
vote for Alison Xamon in the seat of
Perth and Rachel
Siewert in the Senate, or for your local Green candidate if
you live outside Perth or WA.
