Radiological Assessment of Gage Roads for visits by NIMITZ class Aircraft
Carrier
Visits by nuclear powered warships (NPWs) to Australian ports are accepted
only to berths and anchorages that have been assessed against radiological
criteria and approved by the Visiting Ships Panel (Nuclear) (VSP(N)).
Visits must comply with the current Conditions of Entry.
In 1980, the Australian Atomic Energy Commission (AAEC) assessed a nominated
anchorage in Gage Roads, Fremantle, Western Australia, for visits by NIMITZ
class aircraft carriers. These vessels are powered by two nuclear reactors
each having a power level well in excess of 100 Megawatts thermal (MW(t)).
This report has been prepared for the VSP(N) and re-assesses the suitability
of the Gage Roads anchorage for use by NIMITZ class aircraft carriers
using current radiological criteria and population data. The approach
used for this assessment is similar to that used for other Australian
ports.
