The Art Gallery of New South Wales first opened as a permanent public institution in June 1876 in the premises of the New South Wales Academy of Art.

The first volume (19/20599) relates to visitors attending the Art Gallery when it was known as the New South Wales Academy of Art.

These papers were created while Hal Missingham was Director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The correspondence covers 1952-71 and deals with letters to and from artists and other galleries; invitations to various functions; contributions to journals and books; Britannia Art Awards; overseas visit September-October 1965; the round-Australia trip 28 April-30 September 1966; the design of the decimal currency notes and coins in his capacity as a member of the Currency Note Design Group and the Advisory Panel on Coin Design. Also transferred were notes on various artists and notes prepared for lectures, a "Daily Biography 1906-May 1977", desk calendars 1961-71 and two magnetic tape sound-recordings entitled "Hal Missingham (1962 - age 56)" and "My Australia".
