A8779/1 92/39 31 AUGUST 1992 Mrs Diana McRae (391 9033) Standards for Hospital Planning Units, and Health Building Guidelines Summary These Standards for Hospital Planning Units (HPU) set out the functional area allowances for the various Units or Departments which make up a public hospital. The information refers specifically to units or departments for the provision of a Level 4 Service, as defined in the Guide to the Role Delineation of Health Services, N.S.W. Health Department, 1991. The Health Building Guidelines (HBG), which have been developed from the Standards for Hospital Planning Units (HPU), have been prepared for the various departments or units which make up such public hospitals. The Standards (HPU) and Guidelines (HBG) have confirmed that potential exists for savings to be achieved through such measures as the sharing of space, equipment, and staff. The flexible use of space, reduction of functional areas and circulation allowances, and general re-examination of budgeting and estimating philosophies, have also been identified as factors which, if addressed, can contribute to a reduction in the capital and recurrent cost of hospitals whilst maintaining existing standards of patient care. Both the Standards (HPU) and the various Guidelines (HBG) which are to follow should be useful to architects, engineers, health planners and other groups involved with the planning, design and administration of public hospitals. The Standards for Hospital Planning Units and the first of the Health Building Guidelines have now been published and are obtainable from the Technical Services Unit, Capital Works Branch, N.S.W. Health Department, Locked Mail Bag 961, North Sydney, N.S.W. 2059.
