BIOGRAPHY JOHN McCARTHY AO AMBASSADOR TO JAPAN Mr McCarthy took up the appointment of Australian Ambassador to Japan on 27 July 2001. Mr McCarthy's previous assignment was as Ambassador to Indonesia from 1997-2000. Mr McCarthy was Ambassador to the United States from 1995-97, having previously served twice in Washington. Mr McCarthy has served as Australia's Ambassador to Vietnam (1981-83), Ambassador to Mexico (1985-87), and Ambassador to Thailand (1992-94). He has also served in Syria, Iraq and Laos. From 1994-95, Mr McCarthy was Deputy Secretary in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Mr McCarthy was born in Washington D.C. on 29 November 1942. He was educated at Cambridge University (MA, LLB.). He is a barrister-at-law and practised in London from 1965-66. He worked with the New York law firm of Shearman and Sterling from 1966-67. He commenced work as an Australian foreign service officer in 1968. Mr McCarthy has two daughters. July 2001 |
