Best Yet Harmony Day in South Australia

On 21 March Adelaide commuters will be greeted by the Glenelg tram and a city bridge brilliantly gift wrapped in Harmony Day orange.

The decorated tram and the Victoria Bridge at the beginning of Morphett St, spanning the River Torrens, will be among the highlights of Harmony Day 2002 in South Australia, the Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, Gary Hardgrave MP said today.

"With less than three weeks to Harmony Day 2002 on March 21, South Australia's response to Harmony Day has been tremendous," the Minister said.

"We're encouraging South Australian schools, business, community groups and government bodies to join in this important event."

Harmony Day, which began in 1999, is emerging as Australia's largest national multicultural event. It coincides with the United Nations' Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Mr Hardgrave said that the diverse range of South Australian events included citizenship ceremonies in Mitcham and Marion, an official launch in Rundle Mall, open day at a local mosque and seminars on diversity in Hindmarsh and Adelaide.

"Harmony Day is part of the Commonwealth Government's Living in Harmony initiative. Last September four South Australian organisations received Living in Harmony grants," said Mr Hardgrave.

One of these grant holders, the City of Salisbury, will launch the Kaurna Park Aboriginal Interpretative Trail on 21 March 2002. The event will include performances by indigenous artists, arts and crafts workshops and a special welcome by children from the Kaurna Plains Aboriginal School.

Harmony Day is managed by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs with assistance from the Council for Multicultural Australia.

Harmony Day ribbons and stickers can be obtained from Woolworths outlets in South Australia and AMP's Colonnades Shopping Centre in Noarlunga.
