Australia Day Speech of Mrs Barbara Mazzel Anne PERRY, State MP representing the NSW Premier The Hon Bob CARR
by: Mrs Barbara PERRY on 1/27/2004

Speech of Mrs Barbara Mazzel Anne PERRY, State MP representing the NSW Premier The Hon Bob CARR, MP mentioned how proud she was that she turned on the T.V on Monday 26th  and saw in the Melbourne Australia Day celebrations a UALM banner; and how disappointed she is in the media for all the unkind attention they give to the Lebanese community-always focusing on the few that cause trouble and neglecting all the great contributions.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am honoured to join you this evening as representative of the Premier of New South Wales, the Hon. Bob Carr.  The Premier has asked that I extend his apologies and regrets for not being able to be here.

He has also asked that I express his gratitude for the much-needed role in raising awareness of citizenship responsibilities and supporting the Lebanese community in social and cultural initiatives that you play as an organisation, and as individuals.

I would also recognise and honour on his behalf the work you do in building cultural bridges between those of Australian Lebanese heritage and the wider community of New South Wales and in deepening relations between Australia and Lebanon.

I am privileged to be associated with UALM and take great pleasure in being part of the functions I am invited to-I was with you last for your annual fundraising dinner in 2003.

As an Australian of Lebanese descent it is comforting and rewarding for me to be with Australian Lebanese people such as yourselves, for not only do we share a common heritage, but we also share a love and respect for this country for everything it has offered and means to us, as well as a commitment to giving back in whichever way we can.

Lebanese people have been immigrating to Australia for over 120 years and today can be found making outstanding contributions in every field, from business, to politics, the arts, law, medicine and the social sciences.

Beyond that to the grass roots level we recognise those whose work is perhaps not as lauded, but remains just as important.

The mothers, fathers and grandparents who work hard to provide for their families and faithfully instil in their children sound values of respect, hard work, care for their fellow human being and the will to succeed.

Where would we be without them or the friends and relatives whose love and support sustains us through the hardships that so often are encountered on the road to success.

I know this most certainly to be true for myself and I have no doubt that this rings true for many, if not all of you.

But tonight we are here to honour first and foremost those who have made their mark in the various pursuits and to them I extend my warmest congratulations and commendation.

I would encourage each and every one to keep up the good work-for you are a credit to us as a community, and serve as much needed positive role models for the young and aspiring.

Tonight we mark also the occasion of Australia Day, which is a time to reflect upon what this country and being an Australian means to us.

We remember that we live in a country like very few other-peaceful, abounding in opportunities, beautiful and free.

And we share this land with those from a myriad of different backgrounds-each unique in their own way and each, without exception, valuable and to be embraced without fear or prejudice.

This principle, going to the heart of your organisation, is one that we live in everything we do and say and are.

We must remind ourselves of this and continue to lead by example as you all do so remarkably well.

With no more to say I wish you an enjoyable evening and the best for the year ahead.

Thank you
