Hundreds Attend UALM BBQ in Support of the People of Lebanon

Sydney, Australia: The United Australian Lebanese Movement (UALM) held its annual family day BBQ on Sunday 17 September 2006. Over 400 people packed into the YMCA hall in Greenacre in what the UALM dubbed a ?BBQ in support of the people of Lebanon?.

The day had special importance since it was an occasion whereby the UALM could express its solidarity with the people of Lebanon who had to endure 33 days of constant indiscriminate attacks.

The UALM was joined by many representatives of the various Australian-Lebanese religious, political, social and cultural organisations. Also, present were UALM Victoria branch members.

The MC for the day was Mr. Stephen Andraous, who captivated the audience with his poetry.

The busy day kicked off with the national Anthems of Australia and Lebanon and then our resident D.J George Khouri got the dancing started with his special mix of patriotic Lebanese music.

The audience was treated to a special acoustic rendition of old Lebanese folkloric songs by the UALM?s very own Lahoud Hadchiti.

UALM Melbourne branch member and poet Antoine ?el-Zaghloul? Barsouna delighted the audience with his traditional Lebanese poetry, el-Zaghloul had the audience begging for more and he was made to repeat his poems on numerous occasions.

The UALM?s address in English was delivered by Charlie Khouri, UALM Federal Spokesperson. He spoke of the important role that the Lebanese all over the world had played, he went on to say that Lebanon and the Lebanese are going through a historical time at the moment and he asserted that Lebanon needed unity to be able to surpass all obstacles. He asserted that the people of Lebanon are a tower of strength in the face of adversity.

The UALM Arabic address was delivered by Mohamed Derbas, UALM NSW Branch President. He spoke of the fact that the Australian-Lebanese community was a strong community and that Lebanon stands to gain from the Diaspora. Mr. Derbas also stated that it is paramount that the Lebanese stand shoulder to shoulder with each other. Moreover, he affirmed that the war on Lebanon helped unify the Lebanese people and that this bond will never break.

There was an address given by the Secretary-General of the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) Dr. Pierre Raffoul. He maintained that even though the constant attacks on Lebanon caused a large amount of death and destruction, Lebanon will come out stronger because of the steadfastness of its people. He declared that Lebanon is like a phoenix that will rise from the ashes. Dr. Raffoul spoke about the huge humanitarian effort being conducted by the FPM and that the catastrophe that has engulfed Lebanon has solidified the already strong bond between Muslims and Christians.

The UALM annual BBQ of 2006 was a huge success and has shown once again that the UALM has a strong supporter base. The UALM is an integral part of the Australian-Lebanese community.
