Granville

Sydney Western Suburbs - Very Safe Labor 14.6%

MP Kim Yeadon (ALP) since 1990. Minister for Information Technology, Energy, Forests and Western Sydney.

Profile A western suburbs electorate south of the western rail line near Parramatta. It includes the suburbs of Granville, Guildford, Holroyd, Merrylands and South Wentworthville .

History/Trivia Created as a seat on the rural fringe of Sydney in 1894, it was first won for Labor by Jack Lang in 1913, and has been in Labor hands ever since. It was held by Laurie Ferguson 1984-90, when he transferred to the overlapping Federal seat of Reid. Ferguson is the son of former Deputy Premier Jack Ferguson, and the brother of former ACTU President and Federal Labor frontbencher Martin Ferguson. According to the 2001 Census, the population of the electorate is rising at around the same rate as the state as a whole. However, electoral enrolment has shown a 2.7% decline since 1999, the state's 2nd largest, probably reflecting the growing concentration of non-citizens in the area.

2-Party Booth Result Comfortable Labor majorities in all 22 booths in 1999, ranging from 54.7% at East Granville Primary to 74.1% at Monterey Street in Merrylands West.

Assessment Labor retain.
