SIGNIFICANT HONOUR FOR SCIENTIST
Medical Scientist, Professor Grant Sutherland of the Adelaide Women's and Children's Hospital has been awarded one of Australia's highest research honours, the Ramaciotti Biomedical Award for 2001.
Professor Sutherland, an APESMA member, is a geneticist heading the W&CH Department of Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics. His work on the international Human Genome Project has received significant acclaim. The Ramaciotti Award, which is a medal and a $20,000 prize is given annually by the Clive and Vera Ramaciotti Foundation which was established in 1971.
The award to Professor Sutherland was for the discovery of a method of diagnosing the fragile X chromosome which has led to new understanding of some common forms of intellectual handicap in children.
