In this rare recording two of the great figures of the 20th century
can be heard together. At a dinner held in London George Bernard
Shaw proposed a toast to Albert Einstein. We hear an extract from
Shaw's often witty speech. Then Einstein replies in German, saying:
"Dear
assembly
I do not find it easy to overcome the tendency to live a life
of silent contemplation. But I must not evade the call of the
societies however much and often, for it is, so to speak, at the
same time the call of our sorely tried Jewish people that I have
heeded."
