April
2001
Of
the 59 objects being researched, the first group of 32
has had
the accuracy of catalogue data confirmed against the source
material held by the Gallery.
The
search relating to these objects has moved into the next
phase, which includes consultation with the parties from
whom the Gallery acquired these objects, other previous
owners, scholars, and staff from archives and libraries,
and international government agencies assisting with art
loot enquiries.
In
response to external enquiries made earlier in the year
by the research
team, it has been confirmed that the Master of Frankfurt
painting Virgin and Child with Saint James the Pilgrim,
Saint Catherine and the Donor with Saint Peter was
confiscated by Nazi authorities in 1939. The research team
had been alerted to this possibility when the name ‘Oscar
Bondy', a previous owner, was found on the Commission for
Art Recovery list. This contains the names of many of those
involved in the confiscation of art objects by the Nazis.
The presence of a handwritten inscription ‘OB 1304'
on the reverse of the painting, which did not match Bondy's
catalogue number, supported this assumption.
The
Kommission für Provenienzforschung (Commission for
Provenance Research) of the Austrian Government was able
to confirm the inscription was the number assigned by Nazi
authorities when Bondy's collection was confiscated in
1939
and advised that the painting had been intended for Hitler's
Führermuseum planned for the Austrian city of Linz.
It was also confirmed the painting had been restituted
to
Bondy's widow in 1947. This painting has been withdrawn
from the objects under investigation.
As
well as helping to clarify ownership of these objects,
the research
being undertaken is generating data previously not recorded
in the Gallery's catalogue. To date, 39 elements of new
information
have been collected relating to provenance, published references,
exhibition history, inscriptions and date of object.
This
information will be added to the respective record in the
Gallery's catalogue at the completion of the research
for each object.
