During National Aboriginal Islander Day Of Celebration (NAIDOC) week, Council pays special tribute to the traditional owners of this land, the Biripi and Worimi people, and hopes the whole community enjoy the festivities that will be hosted in the area.
Council will start off the week with its flag raising ceremony out the front of Council’s Administration Centre at 9am, on 7 July 2008, where Aunty Pat Davis – Hurst will welcome us all to country, the Mayor, Eddie Loftus will welcome all to Council, Russell Saunders will share with you “what it means to be Koori” and Aunty Suzie Russell and the Mayor will together raise the Aboriginal flag. A sausage sizzle and morning tea will follow.
“It’s exciting times here in the Manning at the moment with so much going on out there in our community” says Joeanne Tallentire, Council’s Aboriginal Community Officer. “It’s fantastic that Council gets to start the week off with our flag raising ceremony and to have our Elders involved in the ceremony, Elders play such an important role in our community” says Joeanne.
At the end of NAIDOC week, Friday 11 July, Saltwater Tribal Council in partnership with other community organisations will be hosting their big day out at Saltwater with free transport to and from the event. “It’s going to be a fantastic day out at Saltwater and I hope to see you all out there” says Joeanne.
