Youth Engagement Grants

Youth Engagement Grants are made available by the Office of Youth, Department of Employment and Training, for projects which involve young people in government and community decision-making.

Grants of up to $15 000 are available for sustainable projects that are responsive to the needs of local young people and that support the inclusion of young people in the social, cultural and economic life of their communities.

Grants for 2003 projects closed on 31 July 2003. The successful 2003 grant recipients were:

Brisbane North

Caboolture Shire Council, $13 000 to establish a youth advisory group who will advise council, government departments and youth services on local youth issues.

Caboolture Shire Council, $5000 to facilitate young people's involvement in the development of a strategic plan for a Bribie Island youth space.

Redcliffe Youth Space Advisory Group, $12 500 to consult with young people on the best way to utilise the Redcliffe youth space, and design and update a website for the space.

Cascade Place, part of the Cerebral Palsy League Qld, $14 900 for the 'This is your life' advocacy and networking project. This project will provide young people with disabilities with increased opportunities for meaningful community participation through a range of digital media workshops.

Natural High Alternative will receive over $4800 to assist young mothers in the north Brisbane area to advise and influence key decision-makers on issues affecting young mothers in the area.

Brisbane South and Gold Coast

The Spot Community Services, $7500 to help young people develop and produce their own weekly youth radio program focussing on local youth issues.

Community Workforce Solutions, $8500 to expand and develop the existing Youth Voice Committee, comprised of young people in the Wynnum and Manly areas. This committee aims to advise and influence decision-makers on local youth issues.

The Queensland Deaf Society Inc., over $8500 to hold a deaf youth summit. This summit will bring together key stakeholders, including young deaf people from across Queensland, to talk about the needs of young deaf people, and come up with a plan to ensure those needs are met.

Logan City Multicultural Neighbourhood Centre Inc., $4500 to encourage and support young people of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to actively participate in democracy and citizenship at a local level.

Logan City Youth and Family Service Inc., $4800 for the 'Media Wire', an outreach training program that supports young people's participation in developing a local youth news program.

The Queensland Program of Assistance to Survivors of Torture & Trauma Inc., $7500 to establish a support network program for young people from a refugee background.

DDJ Productions, $4600 for the 'Emerging Cocktail' CD launch. This project will showcase 20 emerging artists and highlight their issues to an audience composed of community representatives, local government members, music industry professionals, the media and other young people.

Sudanese Youth Association of Queensland, $6100 to assist Sudanese young people to develop skills to enable them to participate effectively in community decision-making processes.

Wide Bay/Sunshine Coast

Childers Neighbourhood Centre, almost $4500 to conduct a survey to document and prioritise local youth issues, and develop a long-term plan to address these issues.

Kolan Shire Council, almost $5500 to conduct a series of community consultations and develop a youth policy for the Shire.

Burnett Shire Council, over $5600 to establish a youth council. The youth council will advise the Burnett Shire Council on local youth issues.

The Coolum Youth and Community Association Inc., almost $14 900 to encourage indigenous and other young people in the Coolum area to get involved in decision-making processes of their local community, the state and the country.

Southwest Queensland

The Murilla Landcare Group Inc., over $13 500 to establish the Murilla Future Agriculture Group. This group will enable young people to encourage the local community to use sound land utilisation and conservation practices.

The Lao Youth Group of Queensland , $6000 for the 'Re-organise, Re-establish and Re-create' project. This project will enable the Laotian community to teach Laotian history and culture to Lao young people across Queensland .

Warwick Shire Council, $11 000 to investigate youth homelessness in rural Queensland and the housing needs of young people in the Warwick Shire.

Central Queensland

Mouthpiece Youth Street Press, over $6500 for 'Edition 6' of the Mouthpiece Youth Street Press. This publication provides a culturally appropriate avenue for local young people to express their views and opinions.

North Queensland Squadron Air Training Corps Association Inc., over $8100 to assist the Mackay Air Cadet Squadron to run the International Air Cadet Exchange Program. This program is designed to bring young people from overseas and central Queensland together for a series of forums to discuss youth issues.

Centacare, over $4000 for the 'Hear us' youth development project. This project will bring together young people from around the Duaringa Shire to determine the needs of local young people and identify ways to meet these needs.

Centacare, over $4000 to establish a youth council for the Bauhinia Shire. The youth council will assist the Bauhinia Shire Council to determine the needs of local young people and identify ways to meet these needs.

Winton Shire Council, almost $6600 to conduct a leadership training camp which aims to develop young people's skills in team building, goal setting and communication.

North Queensland

The City of Charters Towers Youth Council, 'Youth Towers', over $4400 to assist Charters Towers young people to participate in Speak Out 2003-Bridges Youth Council Conference. This conference addresses how young leaders can build bridges between young people and local government, as well as breaking down bridges between boredom and risk taking behaviour.

Hinchinbrook Community Support Centre,$10 000 to develop a youth development program for the Hinchinbrook Shire. This program will help to identify opportunities for young people to participate in local government and community decision-making processes.

Doomadgee State School Student Council, almost $3000 to assist Doomadgee young people to participate in Speak Out 2003-Bridges Youth Council Conference. This conference addresses how young leaders can build bridges between young people and local government, as well as breaking down bridges between boredom and risk taking behaviour.

The Townsville Sailing Club Inc., $14 400 to enable young people to influence the way marine training, recreation and conservation is provided and administered in the Townsville community.

Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, $7900 for the 'Give us a Break' art exhibition. This project will provide 30 young people from diverse backgrounds to exhibit and curate their own artworks.

The Tropic Sun Theatre Company, $15 000 to provide young indigenous men, currently incarcerated in the Cleveland Youth Detention Centre, with an opportunity to participate in community theatre productions.
