What is BODYPUMP ?

is a 45 to 60 minute non-impact, resistance training programme, that utilises barbells and adjustable weights. It is a studio-based group session which is led by highly skilled, motivating YMCA Group Fitness instructors who ensure every class is safe, effective and fun.

After an initial all-body warm-up, all the major muscle groups are worked via a series of weight bearing exercises including squats, presses, lifts and curls. The larger muscles of the legs, chest and back are worked first in that order, followed by the smaller muscles of the arms, namely the biceps, triceps and shoulders. The legs are worked a second time in the form of lunges before the abdominals are trained. The class finally finishes with a well earned cool-down and stretch.

Throughout the class the focus is on correct lifting technique and postural alignment, which is carried over into everyday activities. Using light to moderate weights and high repetitions, each muscle group is worked for about 5 minutes before over-load is achieved.

This type of endurance training is excellent for increasing lean body mass, improving muscle tone and definition but without causing bulking.

So you won't get big, just toned and strong.

Stretching between tracks aids recovery, whilst at the end of the session, helps to maintain and improve flexibility, promote postural restoration and decrease the risk of injury.

Who is it for ?

Everybody! is deliberately pre-choreographed using simple moves so that it appeals to both men and women of all ages and fitness abilities... co-ordination is NOT a pre-requisite! People of all fitness abilities can enjoy the workout together and feel success because the self-regulated, adjustable weights mean you can control the intensity of your workout.

You will find that the synergy of group training enables you to achieve a volume and intensity of work that would be difficult to replicate on an individual basis and exploring your physical limits becomes more attractive with support of your peers.

The Benefits of BODYPUMP

  • can help to improve your posture by emphasising controlled and balanced strength training, reinforcing ideal postural alignment, which is carried over into daily activities.

  • promotes muscular endurance and, as a result, it can improve performance in many sports.

  • will increase your overall self-confidence as well as your general well-being but be warned...

It will change the shape of your body!!!

Benefits of BODYSTEP ?

works both the upper and lower body at a muscular conditioning level. It will also improve coordination and agility through the various movements during a class. These include multidirectional movements, rapid changes in direction, level changes (dropping from a higher to a lower stance) and variations of foot-strike and lever length.

Strength gains from are generally realized through improved muscular endurance. Incorporated between periods of cardiovascular conditioning are specific, muscular conditioning tracks that focus primarily on the upper body and secondarily on the abs and mid section. For example:

  • Climb over 2000 steps (approximately 3.5 miles) in one hour.

  • On and off step movements promote strength endurance for buttocks, the front of the legs, the back of the legs, and calves (no wonder BODYSTEP participants have such great legs!).

  • Push-ups promote abdominal control and muscular strength endurance for the chest, the shoulders and the back of the arms.

  • Squats and lunges help to improve strength of the lower body including buttocks, the front of the legs, the back of the legs and calves.

What is the Pilates Method of body conditioning?

Imagine an exercise program that you look forward to, that engages you, and that leaves you refreshed and alert with a feeling of physical and mental well-being. The Pilates Method (pronounced puh-LAH-teez) of body conditioning will do all this...and more.

Developed in the 1920s by the legendary physical trainer and founder of the Pilates Studio™, Joseph H. Pilates, The Pilates Method is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility and strength for the total body without building bulk. Not surprisingly, some of the first people to use the Pilates Method were dancers such as Martha Graham and George Balanchine.

The Pilates Method is not just exercise, however. It is a series of controlled movements engaging your body and mind, performed on specifically designed exercise apparatus and supervised by extensively trained teachers.

Benefits of the Pilates Method

The Pilates Method of body conditioning promotes physical harmony and balance for people of all ages and physical conditions while providing a refreshing and energizing workout.

Because conditioning sessions are done one-to-one with a certified teacher or in closely supervised small groups, each session is tailored to your specific needs.

Regardless of your current level of fitness - from sedentary office worker to fitness enthusiast - the Pilates Method can be your primary mode of body conditioning and injury prevention.

Recently discovered by physical therapists, chiropractors and orthopaedists, The Pilates Method of body conditioning can also be integrated into rehabilitative exercise and physical therapy programs designed to speed recovery of soft tissue injuries.

The Pilates Method can be safely used by pregnant women to learn proper breathing and body alignment, improve concentration, and recover body shape and tone after pregnancy.

What's Different about the Pilates Method?

Joseph H. Pilates designed more than 500 specific exercises using five major pieces of unique apparatus to develop the body uniformly.

Instead of performing many repetitions of each exercise, Joseph H. Pilates preferred fewer, more precise movements, requiring proper control and form.

Because your mind is required to engage with your body to perform the movements correctly, you experience a new awareness of muscle function and control.

The "powerhouse" - abdomen, lower back, and buttocks - is supported and strengthened, enabling the rest of the body to move freely.

To provide safe and effective conditioning for our clients, instruction is given only by teachers who complete a rigorous certification program including seminar training and 600 apprenticeship hours. The certification program has been continued by Romana Kryzanowska, Master Teacher, who was personally trained by Joseph Pilates. After Joseph's death, his wife, Clara, asked Romana to carry on Joseph's work.

Please Note :
Classes are limited to 20 for that extra personal attention !!!
