CFMEU, Raiders and local businesses support children at the Canberra Hospital

CFMEU Secretary Sarah Schoonwater presents a $60,000 cheque to Katy Gallagher MLA

The CFMEU – in partnership with the Canberra Raiders - and local businesses have banded together to develop a playground for children attending the Canberra Hospital’s Child At Risk Health Unit (CARHU) with a further $60,000 donation being made to install a new sun shade and build a multi-purpose room for the facility.

As Minister for Health I was happy to extend my thanks to these organsations for this generous donation which followed on from a previous$46,000 donation made last year by the CFMEU with a number of local businesses who pitched in to purchase equipment and manage the project to build the playground for the young people accessing the facility.

We have an incredible community, providing fantastic support for our most vulnerable and youngest Canberrans. Generous donations and support such as this is something that makes one feel really proud to be part of our great community.

This donation of $60,000 from the CFMEU – in partnership with the Raiders – will go to further developing the new playground within the CARHU.  Children attending the CARHU regularly have times when they need to wait for appointments and assessments, and some have to travel considerable  distances to attend the facility.

The playground that we are launching today will provide a purpose-built and safe environment for children to have fun and relax. Many of these children have experienced abuse and neglect and often feel responsible for their family troubles: a playground encourages them to enjoy being children.

In addition to the cash donation from the CFMEU for the original playground last year, three other organisations donated their services at no cost to the project.  IQON provided project management; AC&A Architects provided architectural services; and ACT Procurement Solutions waived their fee for services.

The CFMEU and Canberra Raiders representatives were pleased to present the Minister with the cheque to the value of $60,000 for the purchase of a sun shade for the new playground and the construction of an indoor/outdoor multi-purpose room to be used for foster parents and other parent group meetings and training programs.
