October Update

Dear All,
I suppose most of you will have heard the sad news of the passing away of the great Australian singer Joan Sutherland, in Geneva, last night. I’ve been listening to some of her extraordinary recordings on ABC Classic FM this morning, with wonder and amazement, and count myself lucky to have heard her in performance on a number of occasions.

Several ANATSACT members, including myself, attended the recent ANATS Conference in Brisbane. It was a most interesting and enjoyable experience, and of course, it’s always great to catch up with old friends,  and to meet
new ones!

At the AGM, President Rowena Cowley announced that ANATS membership has now reached the impressive figure of 400, making ANATS the fourth largest pedagogic society for voice in the world. A significant achievement! To keep you up to date, the President’s report will be available on the ANATS Website.

ANATS does, and has done, much to promote voice teaching as a profession, and to encourage and support research into all matters relating to the singing voice, in Australia. Publications such as the scholarly journal, Australian Voice, have been a part of this process.

A new book, Perspectives on Teaching Singing , edited by Scott Harrison, was launched at the conference. This is the first ANATS publication, and draws together the work of leading resarchers and practitioners in Australia. I’m enjoying reading it, and finding out more about the work of my Australian colleagues, I must say.

The next International Congress of Voice Teachers will be held in Brisbane in 2013, which will be the 25th Anniversary of the founding of ANATS, and you can already feel the excitement! The Congress will take place at Queensland Conservatorium, and neighbouring venues, Brisbane’s Southbank, home to wonderful theatres, galleries etc.

Attached to this email you’ll find the flyer for our PD Day, which will take place on October 31. I do encourage you all to attend, and if possible to bring a friend who’s not yet in ANATS, but who might be interested, as it’ll be informative and highly relevant program. Also fun! We will also have some music for sale on the day, for those who like to browse, and who may wish to expand their libraries.

See you at the PD Day!
All the best,
Angela
