First GP Super Clinic funding announced in Palmerston
A Rudd Labor Government will contribute up to $10 million towards the creation of a GP Super Clinic in Palmerston to provide better health services to Top End families.
Once completed, the Palmerston GP Super Clinic is expected to include:
- 24 hour a day GP service;
- Chronic disease and complex care management services;
- Outpatient services provided on an outreach basis from the Royal Darwin Hospital, such as cancer and oncology support services, obstetrics and gynaecology and ophthalmology;
- A greater range of allied health services such as physiotherapy, dieticians and, podiatry than are currently available; and
- Dental services.
The GP Super Clinic follows Federal Labor’s strong and detailed plans for the Northern Territory, which include:
· $32 million for the extension of Tiger Brennan Drive to link Tiger Brennan to the Stuart Highway;
· Brand new child care centres in Darwin and Palmerston;
· Improved broadband infrastructure;
· Significant boost the Darwin AFP headquarters with additional sworn AFP officers; and
· New trade training centres for Top End schools.
More and more young families are re-locating to the Top End – particularly Defence families.
Federal Labor will work with the Northern Territory Government to finalise the various services to be delivered at the Palmerston GP Super Clinic.
Federal Labor’s commitment to a GP Super Clinic in Palmerston will help with the pressing health issues of the Palmerston community.
It is a practical example of how our GP Super Clinics policy can benefit families and improve health services by:
· Providing an after hours GP service – 24 hours a day – Federal Labor is responding to community needs as well as helping to take pressure off public hospitals in the Top End; and
· Working co-operatively with the Territory Government to help the health system respond to the community’s needs and avoid the blame shifting and cost-shifting that now goes on.
Federal Labor's commitment will mean a better range of health services and better integration between health services – including public and privately provided services – for the people of Palmerston.
