ACT LAW SOCIETY CELEBRATES 75 YEARS

Simon Corbell MLA, 12 May 2008 ACT LAW SOCIETY CELEBRATES 75 YEARSACT Attorney General Simon Corbell today launched Law Week 2008 and celebrated the 75th anniversary of the ACT Law Society. “I congratulate the Law Society on 75 years of service to both the legal profession and the wider ACT community,” said Mr Corbell. "It is no coincidence of course that, also turning 75 in the next year, is our Supreme Court, where so many of the Society’s members have practised or served with distinction over the years.” "Women now make up more than 50 per cent of the Society’s membership. A sign of the quality of the ACT’s female lawyers has recently been exemplified by the appointment, many would say long overdue, of the ACT’s first resident female judge and ACT resident, the Honourable Justice Hilary Penfold. Every year, the Law Society supports a charity through raising donations through Law Week activities. This year, the Law Week charity is the Snowy Hydro SouthCare Helicopter Service, the local “I commend the Law Society for their continuing support of young lawyers and local charities, and wish the Society every success for Law Week and its next 75 years,” Mr Corbell said. The Law Society regulates the ACT’s legal profession to ensure that the highest professional and ethical standards are maintained, and provides support and professional development services to its 1,300 members. The Society also provides information and services to the community, including free legal advice and a pro-bono clearing house.
