** A6. RECORDING OR MEDIA OPPORTUNITIES

IFPI OFFERS RADIO BROADCASTERS INTERNATIONAL LICENSING FOR WEBCASTING
Music industry trade group the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry yesterday unveiled an
international webcast licensing scheme for terrestrial radio broadcasters. Through the new IFPI licensing
plan, actually a set of reciprocal agreements among 24 nations' music trade groups, record labels are
allowing traditional radio outfits such as market leaders Clear Channel Communications and Viacom's
Infinity Broadcasting to simulcast their broadcasts online in dozens of countries.
The international license covers an "experimental period" that runs through May 2002. However, no
specific licensing terms have been set. Instead, the system allows broadcasters to negotiate a single
webcast rate with the IFPI that will cover webcasts in the 24 participating nations. Prior to this new
system, which was developed by the IFPI, broadcasters had to obtain licenses from individual countries.
The countries recognizing the new international license are Austria,
Denmark, Germany, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, the UK, Czech Republic,
Hungary, Poland, Slovak Republic, Canada, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, Taiwan,
South Africa, Argentina, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.
About 5,100 radio stations worldwide webcast their terrestrial signals,
according to ecommerce company BRS Media. That's about 20% more than the 4,058 radio stations
webcasting their signals a year ago.
The IFPI represents 46 music trade groups and about 1,400 record companies worldwide. [From
