Sydney Rail Projects

AIRPORT RAIL LINK

  • Estimated Government contribution $700 million joint venture - Government and Transfield
  • 10 km tunnel
  • Five new stations: Green Square, Mascot, Wolli Creek, and the international and domestic terminals
  • Illawarra passengers interchange at Wolli Creek station allowing easy access to new stations
  • Links to East Hills Line with increased number of services between Campbelltown/ Macarthur and the city during peak periods
  • 9 minute direct service to Kingsford Smith Airport from Central
  • 900 construction jobs

BONDI BEACH RAIL LINK

  • Estimated $141 million total cost (Lend Lease/Macquarie Bank venture with modest Government contribution)
  • 2.3 km tunnel
  • Proposal to extend the Eastern Suburbs Railway from Bondi Junction to Bondi Beach
  • Travel time savings up to 30 mins
  • 260 construction jobs

  • 1998 - Pre-feasibility work and Environmental Impact Statement
  • 1999 - Environmental Impact Statement on exhibition
  • 1999 - Commence construction
  • 2002 - Line open

PARRAMATTA RAIL LINK

  • Estimated cost $1,4 billion
  • 28 km (21 km tunnel)
  • New stations-. Macquarie University and Macquarie Park, optional stations Delhi Road and UTS Kuringai
  • Major upgrade at Westmead, Parramatta, Epping, Camellia, Carlingford and Chatswood stations
  • Eight services per hour
  • 18 million passenger journeys by 2006
  • Travel time savings - Parramatta to Chatswood in 24 mins (save 33 mins); Westmead to Rydalmere in 6 mins (save 39 mins)
  • 1, 1 20 construction jobs

  • November 1998 - Commence Environmental Impact Statement
  • May 1999 - Exhibit Environmental Impact Statement
  • December 1999 - Commence construction
  • 2006 - Line open

EPPING TO CASTLE HILL LINE

  • Estimated cost $360 million
  • 7 km (all tunnel) with stations at West Pennant Hills and Castle Hill, and upgrade of the existing Epping Station
  • 6 trains per hour peak period frequency
  • 400 construction jobs

    Project timetable.

  • 2000 - Commence Feasibility study and reserve corridor
  • 2003 - Commence Environmental Impact Statement
  • 2004 - Commence construction
  • 2010 - Line open

HURSTVILLE TO STRATHFIELD RAIL LINK

  • Estimated cost $800 million
  • 11 km (all tunnel)
  • Connections to five key rail line-lines: Illawarra Line (Hurstville), East Hills line (Kingsgrove), Bankstown line (Campsie) and Western and Northern lines (Strathfield)
  • Interchange with existing stations. Possible new stations at Croydon Park, Enfield, South Strathfield or South Belmore.
  • Dedicated high frequency shuttle between Hurstville and Strathfield increasing cross-regional rail interchange opportunities on the connecting rail lines.
  • Travel time savings from Strathfield to Hurstville (up to 14-20 mins)
  • 740 construction jobs

  • 2007 - Commence Environmental Impact Statement
  • 2008 - Planning approvals sought

LIVERPOOL 'Y' LINK

  • Estimated cost $30 million
  • 850 metres of new rail track (double track) connecting existing Main Southern Line with the East Hills Line west of Holsworthy
  • Improve services between Liverpool and the City
  • Provide express rail service between Liverpool and Sydney Airport with direct link from Liverpool to East Hills line
  • Travel time savings - Liverpool to the City via Granville (save 5 mins)
  • 130 construction jobs

  • 1999 - Reserve corridor
  • 2008 - Detailed planning and design work
  • 2010 - Commence construction

Action for Transport 2010 - Sydney Bus Projects

LIVERPOOL TO PARRAMATTA TRANSITWAY

  • Project Cost - $198 million
  • 30 km bus transitway (21 km on new bus only road)
  • 5 minute peak frequency when fully operational
  • Liverpool to Parramatta via Hoxton Park and the Wetherill Park industrial area, servicing Prairiewood Town Centre, Fairfield Hospital, Wetherill Park and Miller TAFEs and Wetherill Park, Smithfield and Prestons industrial areas
  • 34 state-of-the-art stations, well lit, with security cameras and real time electronic information
  • Travel time savings - West Merrylands to Wetherill Park in 20 minutes, (save 50 mins); Bonnyrigg to Miller TAFE - 1 5 mins (save 40 mins); Green Valley to Fairfield Hospital in 16 mins (save 50 mins)
  • 930 construction jobs

    Project Timetable:

  • End 1998 - Commence construction
  • 1999 - Complete construction of first section (North Liverpool to Edensor Road)
  • 2003 - Complete project

BLACKTOWN - WETHERILL PARK TRANSITWAY

  • Estimated cost - $97 million
  • 10.5 kms bus transitway from Wetherill Park to Blacktown via the Boral Site
  • 1 0 minute peak frequency
  • State-of-the-art stations, well lit, with security cameras and real time electronic information
  • Travel time savings - Wetherill Park to Blacktown in 35 mins (save 11 mins), Wetherill Park to Prospect in 19 in ins (save 13 mine)
  • 430 construction jobs

PARRAMATTA - BLACKTOWN TRANSITWAY

  • Estimated cost - $34 million
  • 5 km bus transitway between Parramatta and Blacktown via Great Western Highway (connecting to the Liverpool - Parramatta Transitway)
  • 10 minute peak frequency
  • State-of-the-art stations, well lit, with security cameras and real time electronic information
  • 140 construction jobs

  • 2001 - Commence construction
  • 2004 - Complete project

BLACKTOWN - CASTLE HILL TRANSITWAY

  • Estimated cost - $225.5 million
  • 14.5 km bus transitway
  • 10 minute peak frequency
  • State-of-the-art stations, well lit, with security cameras and real time electronic information
  • Travel time savings - Blacktown to Norwest in 17 mins (save 41 mins); Blacktown to Castle Hill in 30 mins (save 38 mins)
  • 870 construction jobs

PARRAMATTA - ROUSE HILL (MUNGERIE PARK) TRANSITWAY

  • Estimated cost - $164 million
  • 16 km bus transitway
  • 5 minute peak frequency

  • Travel time savings eg Parklea to Rouse Hill in 2 mins (save 28 mins); Rouse Hill to Parramatta in 31 mins (save 30 mins)
  • 720 construction jobs

PARRAMATTA - STRATHFIELD TRANSITWAY

  • Estimated cost - $35 million
  • 12 km bus transitway between Parramatta and Strathfield via Grand Avenue, Camellia, Rosehill Racecourse and Homebush Bay
  • State-of-the-art stations, well lit, with security cameras and real time electronic information
  • Fully integrated with Parramatta Rail Link - interchange at proposed Camellia station
  • 160 construction jobs

    Project timetable:

  • 1998 - Pre-feasibility studies and implementation of bus priority measures underway
  • 1999 - Homebush Bay to Strathfield bus priority completed
  • 2002 - Complete project

PENRITH TO ST MARYS TRANSITWAY

  • Estimated cost-$11.3million (includes $3.5 million Government contribution)
  • A bus transitway linking the proposed St Marys development site to Penrith and St Marys
  • Subject to rezoning (decision expected in 1999)
  • 50 construction jobs

    Project timetable:

  • Interim services will operate from initial period of development of each stage of the site, using existing roads with some bus priority measures
  • 2003 - Develop link to Penrith
  • 2008 - Develop St Marys link

Action for Transport 2010 - Sydney Road Projects

EASTERN DISTRIBUTOR

  • 6 km link between Sydney CBD, Port Botany and Sydney Airport
  • Links suburbs to the north, cast and south
  • Reduces travel time between the city and airport by avoiding up to 17 sets of traffic lights
  • Reduces traffic on local roads and improves safety for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Bus priority lanes on Flinders, Oxford, William Street and Anzac Parade
  • $3 billion benefit to the economy (source: NSW Chamber of Commerce)
  • Improved access links to Sydney's major container and bulk liquids port at Port Botany-vital to the economic needs of NSW
  • Estimated cost - $684 million, to be funded by a toll
  • 2,900 annual jobs
  • June 2000 - Completion

M5 EAST

  • Toll-free 13 km link between the MS and General Holmes Drive
  • Significantly improve access between south-western Sydney and the major industrial and commercial areas of South Sydney leading to a growth in economic development
  • A fast reliable freight link between the growing industrial areas in south western Sydney, the Airport and Port Botany
  • Reduces travel time between the Eastern Distributor and M5 by avoiding 25 sets of traffic lights
  • Project cost - $750 million
  • 2,000 construction jobs
  • November 1998 - Commenced preliminary work
  • Early 1999 - Start major work
  • Mid 2002 - Completion

WESTERN SYDNEY ORBITAL

  • 39 kilometre north-south linking speed road linking the MS and Hume Highway near Liverpool to the M2 at West Baulkham Hills
  • Promote growth in existing industrial areas and provide fast connections to potential new development areas in Western Sydney eg Ingleside, Wetherill Park and Norwest Business Park
  • Provide a major freight route for commercial vehicles and trucks, linking growing industrial areas in western and south west Sydney with major highways in the south, west and north, the ports and Airport
  • Cut travel times and bypass 56 sets of traffic lights eg Liverpool to Pennant Hills travel time reduced by over 1 hour
  • Estimated cost - $800 million. Federal Government responsible for funding National Highways
  • 1,200 construction jobs
  • Work could be completed by 2007 as part of the National Highway System

M2 TO GORE HILL

  • A tolled motorway to link the M2 and the Gore Hill Freeway
  • Community consultation is underway to examine route options.
  • Final project costing will depend on the outcomes of consultation.
  • The estimated cost is in the range of $350 to $440 million. Open 2004, toll funded.

CITY WEST LINK

  • High standard link from Darling Harbour and CBD to Parramatta Road and the recently widened M4
  • Work underway on Section 3 - Balmain Road, Lilyfield to Boomerang Street, Haberfield
  • Project cost Section 3 - $47.5 million
  • Completed - grade separation of the intersection of Victoria Road and The Crescent at Rozelle, new 4 lane road between The Crescent and Balmain Road at Leichhardt with an interim connection to Lilyfield, widening of Dobroyd Parade between Boomerang Street and Waratah Street at Haberfield
  • 300 annual construction jobs
  • July 2000 - Completion

METROAD 7 (CUMBERLAND HIGHWAY)

  • Upgrade between The Horsley Drive and Merrylands Road and widened to 6 lanes
  • Provides the access to major industrial areas andemployment centres of Smithfield and Wetherill Park
  • Improvements include bus bays, additional turning lanes, traffic signals to improve the access to the Woodpark Industrial area, pedestrian footways and landscaping
  • Improves road safety, reduces travel times and trafficnoise and reduces vehicle operating costs
  • The $25 million protect is funded by the Federal Government under the National Highways Program.
  • 1999 - Commence work
  • 2001 - Completion

CROSS CITY TUNNEL

  • 1.2 km tunnel, 25 metres below Park and Druitt Streets
  • Links the Western Distributor and the Eastern Distributor
  • Removes a significant amount of traffic from the city and help improves public transport and pedestrian safety
  • Combined with the Eastern Distributor, which avoids as many as 17 traffic lights, 29 sets of traffic lights would be bypassed
  • Travel time reduced from 20 mins to 2 mins
  • 4,000 vehicles per hour at peak times or 48,000 per day
  • $273 million project to be fully paid for by toll
  • 1,400 construction jobs
  • 2004 - Completion

PARRAMATTA ROAD

  • Parramatta Road upgrade involving majorintersection improvements and construction of the final stage of theCity West Link
  • Consideration of intersection improvements include Frederick Street, Great North Road and M4 Motorway intersection
  • Travel time between the city and western Sydney improved for buses and cars
  • Reduce congestion and delays on Parramatta Road between the M4 and the City
  • Trafficon local roads parallel to Parramatta Road reduced
  • A preliminary works estimate is $70 million
  • Preliminary work to commence 1999, completion by 2007

PRINCES HIGHWAY

  • The Government is investigating a number of projects including improved tidal flows, such as the successful project at Canal Road, and examining transit lanes to relieve congestion and improve public transport opportunities.
  • Travel times will he improved to the City, Airport, Port Botany terminals and Cooks River Goods Yards
  • December 1998 - Completion upgrade Canal Road tidal flow system

VICTORIA ROAD

  • Transit lanes will be extended on Victoria Road by removing the existing S lanes.
  • Road capacity increased and travel times improved for buses and multi-occupancy vehicles.
  • $26 million Devlin Street grade separation, to open by December 1998, to improve traffic flow on Victoria Road.
  • Community consultation underway
  • Improve bus travel times between CBD to Ryde

MILITARY ROAD

  • Encourage multi-occupancy vehicles to use the existing transit lanes.
  • Stage I - improve city bound transit lanes and upgrade bus facilities by 2000. A significant bus priority improvement schemehas been implemented ata cost of $3.5 million.
  • Stage II - extend the outbound transit lane from Warringah expressway to Spit Bridge, remove 'S' lanes andmake intersection improvements including 'B' bus priority traffic signals.
  • Improve bus travel times and reduce traffic congestion
  • Estimated project cost $50 million

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

  • New $28.5 million Transport Management Centre operational by mid 1999
  • Latest technologies to better manage the State's road network, deliver up-to-the-minute information to road-users and enable quick response to traffic conditions
  • Technology includes Incident Management System, Variable Message Signs, Variable Speed Limit System, Closed Circuit Television, SCATS to coordinate traffic lights, Lane Control Devices
  • Experts from the Roads and Traffic Authority, NSW Police and Sydney Buses to ensure traffic and transport issues coordinated with link to State Rail Authority and the rail access network.
