Violence against women dishonours all
The stoning of 17-year-old Dua Khalil Aswad by the men of an Iraqi village for fraternising with a boy from another religion is not a woman's issue. It is a human issue. It is simply the rawest indicator of the mindset that underlies any society that privileges men over women in a socially structured way. It dishonours governments that call themselves honourable. It dishonours the men who can stand by while women are stoned. The gifts of Pentecost
As a teen, I thought the clergy were supposed to do everything. We laity were just called to pray, pay, and obey. Oh yes, and keep the commandments, of course. The original 10 seemed overwhelming enough. Then I discovered the Sermon on the Mount and nearly passed out. This is why many inactive Catholics are so resentful of their upbringing in the Church. Aboriginal Catholic Ministry, Adelaide
Archbishop Philip Wilson has made a special mention of the Otherway Centre - the hub of Adelaide's Aboriginal Catholic community - in his Pentecost pastoral letter on the 1967 referendum anniversary.
