The IALF has provided English language teacher training services
to a number of individuals and organizations for over ten years.
The following describes the three main courses within the IALF teacher
training program. Most courses within the teacher training program
are conducted at the IALF language centres in Jakarta, Surabaya
and Bali. However, it may also be possible to conduct teacher training
activities on client premises.
IALF Certificate in Communicative
English Language Teaching (IALF C-CELT)
Trinity College London Certificate
in TESOL
In-service Certificate in
English Language Teaching (Cambridge ESOL - ICELT)
The IALF also offers its Certificate in Self Access Centre Design
and Management (C-SACDM), a modular course which has been designed
principally for people considering establishing a Self-Access Centre
and for staff who already work in a Self-Access Centre who would
like to upgrade their skills and knowledge.
IALF Certificate in Self Access
Centre Design and Management (C-SACDM)
To meet the need for training in communicative language teaching
in the local context, the IALF has developed a Certificate in Communicative
Language Teaching (IALF C-CELT) aimed at providing practical training
at an affordable price.
Completion of 5 modules (which must include the introductory module:
Principles of Communicative Language Teaching) leads to the award
of the C-CELT.
C-CELT Framework
The modules have been designed to give the participants a combination
of classroom input, the opportunity to observe experienced teachers,
as well as the opportunity to plan and deliver short English language
lessons to other participants (peer-teaching) and to a group of
‘real’ students.
Each module is of a five-day duration, Monday to Friday. Participants
will participate in twenty hours of practical input sessions, guided
observations, tutorials and teaching practice. Input sessions are
held each morning, with teaching practice, tutorials and observations
taking place each afternoon.
The first one-week module is Principles of Communicative
English Language Teaching.
This introductory module focuses on all the classroom planning
and management basics: lesson planning, managing the class, using
visual aids, error correction, teacher talk, and some teaching techniques.
It is designed both to confirm and reflect on current knowledge
and skills, and also to introduce new ideas and techniques. It emphasises
the importance and value of lesson planning, and through the process
of plan-teach-reflect, encourages teachers to evaluate their own
teaching and its effect on the learners.
By the end of the week, we would expect participants to have more
confidence, both in their English skills (having followed an intensive
training program delivered in English) and their teaching skills.
Participants then select four from the following modules, each
with its own specific focus.
| Module 2 |
Lesson Planning and Classroom Management |
| Module 3 |
Teaching the Receptive Skills (Listening and Reading) |
| Module 4 |
Teaching the Productive Skills (Speaking and Writing) |
| Module 5 |
Teaching Grammar and Vocabulary |
| Module 6 |
Teaching Pronunciation and Intonation |
| Module 7 |
Teaching Large / Mixed Ability Classes |
| Module 8 |
Materials Selection, Adaptation and Design |
| Module 9 |
Assessment and Evaluation in the Classroom |
On request we have additional modules in specialised areas:
- Teaching Young Learners
- Teaching Science and Maths in English
- Teaching IELTS
- Teaching
Knowledge Test (TKT) Preparation
Any of the above modules, both core and specialised, can be offered
as stand-alone modules.
Aims of the C-CELT
To enable the participants to:
- participate in a series of interactive and communicative teacher
training modules, each with a different focus
- use their English language skills in both a learning and teaching
environment
- experience a wide range of teaching methods and styles presented
by both native speaker and local teacher trainers
- access an extensive range of materials and teaching equipment
Participants
The modules have been designed principally for Indonesian national
teachers. In addition, they will be a useful introduction for international
participants who are thinking about a career in English Language
Teaching and want to get an idea of whether it is indeed the way
they want to go, before investing in an internationally accredited
course.
Although the modules focus on English Language Teaching, they will
also be of value to teachers of Indonesian in terms of classroom
management and language teaching methods.
Given the content and language of instruction of the modules, requirements
for non-native speaker participants are:
- Minimum educational qualification: high school graduate
- Minimum English language level: Pre-Intermediate Two (on the
IALF scale)
- Must be fit and healthy and prepared to devote five days’
full-time study (including homework tasks) to the module
- Participants will take a Placement Test prior to entry onto
the C-CELT, which involves an oral interview, a multiple choice
structure/vocabulary test and a short written task.

The IALF has long been involved in the training of local language
teachers in order to promote the development of English language
teaching through the sharing of expertise and skills.
The IALF is an accredited centre for the In-service
Certificate in English Language Teaching (ICELT) from the University
of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. This qualification helps teachers
deepen their knowledge and develop their ability to reflect on and
improve their teaching.
This program combines English language upgrading and teacher training
in a highly practical course which provides in-service teacher training
and development for practicing English Language teachers. During
the course candidates produce a number of written assignments, and
are observed and assessed teaching in a context similar to their
regular teaching environment. The coursework and teaching are internally
assessed and also externally moderated by the University
of Cambridge ESOL unit.
Aims
The program aims to enable candidates to:
- extend their practice, knowledge and understanding of language
required for their professional role, and improve their ability
to use English both generally and for classroom purposes;
- extend their knowledge and awareness of those aspects of language
which are relevant to their professional practice;
- extend their understanding of the context in which their learners
are learning English, and of the principles underlying language
learning and teaching;
- extend their familiarity with resources and materials for English
Language teaching, and develop their ability to use, evaluate,
and where appropriate, adapt or create classroom materials;
- consolidate and refine their planning and their practical classroom
skills;
- identify learner needs, monitor and evaluate learner progress,
and develop awareness of different means of assessment; and
- identify needs and opportunities to further their development
as professionals.
Currently the ICELT course is offered to practising Indonesian
national teachers of English who are based in Bali and working in
local high schools,or to groups of Indonesian national English language
