Interview with Lauren Jackson
Lauren Jackson is one of Australia's best basketball players. She has dominated the WNBL, helped her team to medals at two Olympics, and even conquered America in the WNBA. This year she's looking to help her team to gold at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. youthcentral caught up with Lauren to find out how her preparations for the games are going.
How does it feel to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games?
I'm very proud to represent my Country, especially in front of a home crowd.
Why did you want to be an athlete?
My mum and dad both played basketball at a high level for the Opals and the Boomers before I was born, and they kept playing when I was a child.
What is your goal at this year's Commonwealth Games?
To win a gold medal for Australia .
What is the biggest challenge you've faced as an athlete?
Being injured, and realising what my body is telling me- that I need to rest sometimes!
What has been the proudest moment of your career?
Winning silver medals at two Olympic Games, Sydney and Athens , and also winning a WNBA championship with the Seattle Storm in 2004.
What's it like at the athletes' village? Do you hang out with athletes from other countries?
Yes, it's good to catch up with old friends from around the world.
What is your advice for young athletes?
Work really hard and believe in yourself.
Are you planning on attending any other events as part of the Commonwealth Games?
I would love to watch other events- if we get the chance!
