Rita Bentley

Independent candidate for Southern Metropolitan

Why I am standing

I am standing as an independent candidate because of grave concerns for the future of Victoria should the Greens win the balance of power. The growing and often unjustified Green influence on Victoria’s political process has been working against the best interest of Victorians.

We have lost all sense of balance in relation to environmental decision-making, where we see the environment placed above people and the economy. I believe we need to return to a balance where the needs of people and a vibrant economy receive full consideration in the decision-making processes.

As a mother of teenagers, I abhor many of the Greens social policies. Their business policies are fanciful and expose the lack of worldly experience behind them.

Primarily, I am an endorsed candidate for the Recreational Environment Group. REG is an alliance of people and organisations with an interest in public land and waters management and access. People such as four-wheel drivers, trail-bike riders, horse trail-riders, prospectors, hunters, fishers and other traditional activities who have experienced an erosion of recreational opportunities over recent years.

More than this, I am a mother to two teenage children and manage a family business with my husband in Moorabbin. I have lived in the electorate for 30 years.

Important issues in my electorate

While the Southern Metro Region has its fair share of people who enjoy traditional outdoor activities, I acknowledge that people will be seeking more from their political representations.

My other concerns include the changes in the type of developments being permitted in the Southern Metropolitan Region. While I acknowledge that change is constant, I also believe not all change is good. I am committed to ensuring the wishes of the residents of the Region are considered in planning decisions. We enjoy arguably the best streetscapes in Melbourne – I do not want to see them destroyed by over-development which will also place unnecessary stress on our, often aging, infrastructure.

I share the concerns of most other candidates regarding the lack of hospital beds, facilities for the disabled, growing reliance by government on revenue from gambling and fines, crumbling educational facilities, lack of action on water availability etc. Although I am primarily a REG candidate, I am also a worldly person who would bring a wealth of energy and experience to the Victorian parliament.
