Greens Senator Bob Brown says Heather Hill's loss of her Senate seat is a travesty.
"This unseats an Australian Senator representing a legitimate party, and disenfranchises those who voted for Ms Hill. It means millions of Australian citizens cannot stand for parliament," said Senator Brown.
"The fault here is the failure of successive Liberal and Labor Government's to let Australians fix section 44 of the constitution at a referendum.
"Just this week the Howard Government turned down my appeal to put the issue to the people at the same time as the November 6 referendum on the republic," said Senator Brown.
Senator Brown currently has a bill before the Senate to provide for a referendum to fix the provisions in the constitution that have disqualified Heather Hill.
