WEDNESDAY 31 JANUARY
|
|
How lucky are we? There was barely even time to fool the
boss into thinking you were busy before the celebration of all
things under a Southern Cross tattoo rolled around. But fear
not because it's less than seven weeks before the next
four-day week.
In the mean time we'll just have to make
do by keeping clean and heading off to boot
camp in the hope of defeating DK
himself. If all else fails then there's always the option of
eloping to Paris
and the country of eternal romance, Korea.

TwoThousand. Feburary is when it really starts.

you would like to submit a cover shot email nadia@twothousand.com.au
P.S. This week we're giving away tickets to the biggest
showdown of all time, seriously. You think Ali vs Foreman was
big? Phooey! Get to WATCH
and get excited about KING OF

WHAT: S MAGAZINE #6: VERGE
WHERE: MAG NATION ONLINE
HOW MUCH: $19.95
|
|

|
|
Hello, my name is S
MAGAZINE. I come from Denmark, making me Danish. I feature
the work of many interesting photographers and lots and lots
of naked people - breasts and penises are a forte of mine.
Sure, I might make the odd grammatical error, like the
phrase ‘mainstream conscious of society', but you'll forgive
me, won't you? After all I've done for you, I really think you
owe it to me. Did I mention I can offer you an exciting,
revelatory interview with porn illustrator, and sometime
friend to Peter Allen, Robert Richards And one with Ryan
McGinley Come on! I've hardly got any ads! What about my
amazing Parra illustrations? Or the completely hot
‘Prime of Desire' photo essay by Christian
Friis - don't tell me that won't bring you hours of
enjoyment. Now come on, cut me some slack!
|
|
I'm sorry, I shouldn't have gotten mad. The thing is, I'm
new here, you know, and I just want to make friends. So, what
do you say, you want to grab a cola?

FIRE
WHO: BY THE

ON: ROGUE RECORDS /

|

|
|
Skillfully maneuvering droning organs, looping guitars, and
swooning violins, London-based muso Daniel Lea (aka By The
Fireside) has written an album of damn fine tunes. Recorded in
his homebuilt studio, THE GREAT HARTFORD FIRE is mellow indie
rock with orchestration, emotionally charged yet understated.
Breathy vocals over lilting keys, thumping basslines, and
lackadaisical lines. Think Air's 'PLAYGROUND LOVE, Mercury
Rev, or Beulah's YOKO LP.
|
|
Living in the gritty city is cool and shit, but sometimes
it's nice to just take a drive in the countryside and look at
cows. This is the album to take along. P.S. can you pull over
soon? I have to pee.

Trying to stay one step ahead in the fashion game is kinda
like tying yourself to a treadmill and breaking the off
switch.
Thankfully though, for we fashion tragics, who
love nothing more than the luxurious feel of new,
craftily-designed and beautifully-made "international" threads
against our skin, there are some kind people in this world who
make it a bit easier for us to get our hands on the stuff that
makes our lives a little less dull. Let's call them the
dealers.
|
|
And as luck would have it a Vanessa Bruno store has just
opened in our fair town, oozing sophistication and Parisian
chic that'll make you so happy inside you'll be in a daze for
days.
Run young fashion junkies. Get your fix.

November 1982: LIFE magazine gathers together the best
arcade game players for a tournament and a delightfully
enthusiastic picture, cheerleaders and all. One of the teens was
17-year-old Billy Mitchell, considered the best gamer alive.
Present day: Billy Mitchell, now obviously a Chuck
Norris fashion disciple, still desperately clings to his
surviving DONKEY KONG score and his reputation as a game Jedi.
Down-on-his-luck family man Steve Wiebe plays the same game in
his garage - and we're shown his skill level through a clever
montage drawing together the physics of games, music,
baseball, and more. Has he beaten Billy Mitchell's last
remaining world-record score?
|
|
With accusations of rigged electrics, glitch-scoring, and
restraining orders, KING OF KONG is a sporting drama for
everyone who couldn't catch. It gets some ironic mileage out
of the disjunction between middle-aged white guys and ‘80s
power ballads, but it doesn't go for cheap laughs or lazy
retro appeal. If you're of a certain age and a certain geeky
persuasion, this film won't just pluck at your heartstrings -
it'll make your hands itch.
(Want to prime yourself for
the screening? Here's a free download of Steven Poole's excellent book
TRIGGER HAPPY: THE INNER LIFE OF VIDEOGAMES. Enjoy.)

Before homes had laundries and landlords had the good sense
to introduce the communal coin-op variety, the humble
laundromatte was the place to be seen on a Saturday.
Nowadays, a visit to the Laundromatte-cum-Laundrette
has sunk pretty low on the Sydney social scene and hanging out
with your imitation bonds undies isn't really considered all
that cool.
|
|
The Washing Done not only boasts washing, dry-cleaning and
alterations services but also comes equipped with boredom
busters to aid the prevention of any unwanted 'undie'
conversations. No need to discuss your white wash when you're
kicking back on a comfy couch reading the paper [with an ace
coffee from next door] or whilst you're using the net service
to check your facespace.
And if any of those options
don't appeal to you, take the 'Double Bay' drive-through and
do a drop-off around the back.

Nothing quite displays one's cultural ignorance and
unworldliness like finding a shop and going "that's weird,
right?" or "how cute!" So I'll avoid banging on about the name
(except to say I think it's completely amazing). Coming
straight outta SoKo, crazy motherfronter named Mr Dduckbocki
& Miss Kkochi is a tiny little place on the northern end
of Pitt Street's burgeoning Korea Town. It's a simple affair -
a counter serving various snacks, almost all of which are
described by the lovely staff as 'Korea-style'. |
|
Having never been to Seoul, Korea-style seems to involve
frying or deep-frying the food and skewering it - flavour on
the run. From the awesome chilli rice-cakes and kimbabs to the
slightly more western-style hot dogs, this hopefully signals
the beginnings of genuine street food in Sydney. About time we
caught up.

It's easy to remember Lenko's website, http://www.ilovelenko.com/, because we do
feel that way, actually. That's why we are excited to report
that they're releasing a bunch of new tops this week in their
real-life and online stores. These include 'Soy Cat', 'Saturday Night Hayfever' and 'Brain Surgery' - all way short of your
credit limit at $59. This will coincide with a 25% off all
previous stock sale on the website. When questioned about this
yesterday Dana Lenko said: "Yeehah." As a result of strategic
sucking up to the lady via email, we have a boys and a girls
version of Soy Cat to give away. To enter, just answer the
following question:
|
|
This week's question: When the cat
talks to Dana it says:
a) Milk! Human being bring me
milk. Now.
b) Get away from me you soy-drinking
pussy
c) Sure, "milk", whatever.
d) I do not
recall signing a model release for that T-shirt
design

TwoThousand is a weekly snapshot of Sydney's subculture,
fired by email into the loving arms of people who realise that
the best things in life are often hard to find. It is compiled
by an amorphous gaggle of writers, stylists, designers and

TwoThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured
because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
