In her first leading role in a feature film, Rebecca Gibney from Channel 7’s Packed to the Rafters, gives an outstanding performance in the movie, The Map Reader – a haunting coming of age film, written and directed by Harold Brodie.
Released to DVD in Australia by Arkles Entertainment on 25 November 2009, The Map Reader follows 16 year-old Michael, a lonely teen who leads a reclusive life with his mother Amelia , whose guilt about raising Michael alone threatens to drive him away. As Michael struggles to deal with his Mother’s alcoholism, he seeks solace in reading maps and forms unexpected friendships with his secretive classmate Alison, and a young blind woman named Mary.
After so many years in film and TV, it’s hard to believe it’s taken this long for Rebecca Gibney to be offered the lead role in a feature film. But Gibney has made the most of this opportunity, turning in a stellar performance for director Harold Brodie in The Map Reader. For her role as single mother Amelia, the New Zealand born actress has re-adopted her Kiwi accent and added colour to what would otherwise be a supporting role.
Whilst not particularly bright, Amelia is hard working and eager to please. She wants to reconnect with her son, but her years of alcoholism may have caused irreparable harm to the relationship. Perhaps her greatest accomplishment as a mother will be her willingness to let her son go. A confronting, honest, Australian Drama – THAT is what women want!
Australian films have the ability to connect with us on a level that isnt found anywhere else, ok so she has a kiwi accent in the film we can forgive her for that cant we?
Rebecca Gibney absorbs the role she’s playing and portrays it so you feel you are experiencing it for yourself. A must see on my list!
1. I love Aussie movies they have real gutsyness.
2. With 2 little boys this mother-son stuff is worth researching.. who knows what mistakes I will make!
I simply love to read and need some new material to entice me.
Rebecca Gibney’s roles are always so meaningful and have a message in them, that is why I think that ‘The Map ReadeR’ would be a good movie to watch.
Fiction mimics life. Reading about life experiences enriches the mind.
Love Rebecca Gibneys real woman attitude and look, she’s not perfect, just normal which is fine, I’d enjoy watching The Map Reader.
I keep getting told I can’t read maps – maybe this movie would help!
I enjoy Rebecca’s acting and like the roles she chooses. I also enjoy a good movie and time-out.

Rebecca cant put a foot wrong in the roles she plays..she always gets it right! The Map Reader must be ‘top of my list’ viewing!
